The Agence métropolitaine de transport
(Metropolitan Transit Agency) oversees transit service in 64 municipalities in
and around Montreal by bus, train and taxibus.
The service in the suburbs beyond Montreal, Laval and Longueuil is
provided by a group of over a dozen transit agencies, known either as CIT
(Intermunicipal Transport Councils) or OMIT (Municipal or Intermunicipal
Transport Organizations), ranging from express bus lines running between
downtown Montreal and the suburbs during weekday peak periods, to transit
systems providing local service within the suburbs seven days a week. The bus service is contracted out to a number
of privately owned coach carriers, which often change as new contracts are
signed, routes are established and territories are rearranged.
All photos are by the webmaster.
The CRT de Lanaudière provides local transit
service in the MRCs (Regional County Municipalities) of l’Assomption, Joliette,
and les Moulins, as well as regional commuter service in the MRCs of d’Autray,
Matawinie, and Montcalm. As with many of
the CIT operators, actual bus service is provided by contract operators, but
there are normally about 30 buses in operation during peak periods in the AMT
service area.
