NovaBus LFS

image004

9726 was a 1997 Nova LFS, which had just arrived at Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre on Dec. 24, 2002.  By this time, a small vent had been added to the front of the bus (compare with 9732 below).

image089

9728 was another 1997 Nova LFS, shown at the Rideau Centre on November 11, 2009.  These buses were not air-conditioned, and the 20 purchased in 1997 were the only examples purchased so far by OC Transpo.

image006

9732 is seen here on Lisgar Street at Regional Headquarters, now Ottawa City Hall, on June 27, 1999.  Behind 9732 is GM “Old Look” 5931.

image008

9737 is shown parked at the St. Laurent garage on May 16, 2006.  The LFS buses were all retired on July 12, 2011, along with the last of the Orion V buses in an effort to standardise the OC Transpo bus fleet.

Orion 06.501

image010

image012

4002 is a 1999 Orion VI, seen at St. Laurent Station in April 2001.  The numbering scheme changed with the delivery of these buses.  Between 1957 and 1998, OC Transpo used an annual numbering scheme where the last two digits of the year of purchase were the first two digits of the fleet number.  The scheme was changed because OC Transpo ordered 140 of these buses, and also because buses purchased in 2000 would have been in the 0000 series, which was not favoured by their computer system.  The new numbering scheme starts with 3, 4 or 6 (for the length of the bus), followed by a three-digit consecutive fleet number.

image014

4007 is another 1999 Orion VI, seen shortly after delivery on Nicholas Street near the Rideau Centre in June 1999.  These buses are air-conditioned and have velour covered, thickly padded, high-backed seats to try and draw commuters out of their cars and onto public transit.

image016

4067 is on display behind the St. Laurent garage at the “Open Doors Ottawa” open house on June 4, 2005.  These buses were the first to be ordered in the “Maple Leaf” livery.

image079

4083 is shown laying up on Old Wellington Street near Lebreton Station on February 23, 2009.

image018

4113 is a 1999 Orion VI which has just arrived at Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre on Dec. 24, 2002.  The maple leaf on the front of these buses has been replaced in most cases by the City of Ottawa logo.

image081

4134 was spotted resting near Lebreton Station on February 23, 2009.

New Flyer D60LF

image020

6001 was a 2000 New Flyer D60LF, seen here at St. Laurent Garage shortly after delivery in April 2001.  These buses were the first articulated low-floor buses purchased by OC Transpo, as well as the first air conditioned artics, and the first buses equipped with push bar-type exit doors.

image022

6022 is seen here at St. Laurent Garage in April 2001.  These buses were purchased to replace the Orion/Ikarus buses; however, because of the rear-axle-drive layout, they are more difficult to drive in rain and snow than the older centre-axle-drive Ikarus buses.

image024

Several New Flyer D60LF buses are parked at the St. Laurent Garage in April 2001, some of them still awaiting application of OC Transpo decals.  In the distance, “Old Look” 5108 can just be seen.  This bus was probably used to provide parts for 5931.  For a closer look at 5108, click here, or look at the thumbnail photo in the Historic Fleet Section.

image026

6052 was a 2001 NFI D60LF, shown at Lebreton Transitway Station on Dec. 27, 2006.  About this time, OC Transpo began to add the fleet number to the back of the front ventilator on its articulated buses, as shown in this photo.

image032

Three New Flyer D60LF buses are parked at the St. Laurent garage on May 23, 2002.  They are, from left to right, 6047, 6094, and 6008, purchased in 2001, 2002, and 2000 respectively.

image015

6095 was a 2002 New Flyer D60LF, seen parked at the St. Laurent North garage on August 1st, 2008.

image028

6104 was another 2002 D60LF, boarding passengers at the Rideau Centre on Dec. 28, 2002.  There was no bus 6101; the number was skipped to avoid a conflicting number with the 1961 New Look in the historic bus fleet.

image030

6108 is seen at the St. Laurent garage on May 23, 2002, shortly before entering revenue service.

image089

6110 was spotted on Hunt Club Road at Bank Street in Ottawa’s south end on Oct. 2, 2010.  Structural problems and a trade-in deal with New Flyer Industries on new D60LFR buses led OC Transpo to withdraw the 2001-2004 D60LF buses starting in August 2010, and the last two buses to be retired were 6343 and 6347, which were taken out of service on March 31, 2011.

image019

6127 was seen behind the Aberdeen Pavilion waiting for passengers attending a university football game at Frank Clair Stadium on September 20, 2008.

image083

6157 is shown parked with a number of other New Flyer D40LF buses, both from 2008 and earlier years, at the St. Laurent North garage during the 2008-2009 transit strike on January 10, 2009.  In the background is 1202, a 2008 Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 double decker bus, which entered service in late March 2009.

image021

6167 was seen at Lansdowne Park waiting for football fans on September 20, 2008.  This bus, along with the later 2002 deliveries and the 6300 series buses, had tip-in windows instead of sliding windows as on the earlier D60LF buses.

image034

6172 was a 2002 D60LF, seen at the Rideau Centre on Sept. 5, 2003.  This order of buses brought the fleet numbers up to 6178.

image036

6306 was a 2003 D60LF, seen on the Transitway at the University of Ottawa.  This photo was taken on Sept. 5, 2003.  The first 20 buses purchased in 2003 were equipped with low-emission engines that require ultra-low-sulphur diesel fuel.

image022

6322 was another 2003 D60LF, shown parked at the St. Laurent North garage on August 1st, 2008.

image038

6323 was spotted boarding passengers on the Mackenzie King bridge on Sept. 5, 2003.

image040

6340 was a 2004 D60LF on display behind the St. Laurent garage at the “Open Doors Ottawa” open house on June 12, 2004.  The 2004 order brought the number scheme up to 6350.

image029

6351 was seen again at the St. Laurent North garage on Aug. 1st, 2008.  OC Transpo ordered 48 articulated buses in 2008, bringing the numbering scheme up to 6398.

image031

6355 was spotted having some engine work done at the St. Laurent garage on June 26, 2008.  This bus and the rest of the 2008 order began to enter service in August 2008.

image043

6372 is seen on the Mackenzie King Bridge at the Rideau Centre on Oct. 7, 2008.  The 2008 buses have several design changes compared to the earlier buses, the most obvious being the plain flat panel on the back of the bus in place of the air conditioning grill.  Other differences include using a Cummins ISL engine instead of the Detroit Diesel Series 50 and a lengthened front ventilation module incorporating the air conditioning unit.
