The city of St. Thomas, located about a
half-hour drive south of London, is home to several large manufacturing
companies such as Magna International and the Ford Motor Company, which has one
of its main car-building plants near the city.
The St. Thomas Transit Service provides the city of 36,000 with bus
service from Monday to Friday from 7:15 AM to 6:45 PM and on Saturday from 9:15
AM to 6:45 PM, and the buses meet every half-hour at the main transfer point in
front of Wal-Mart near Talbot Street and First Avenue, east of downtown.  The actual operation of the buses is
contracted to Aboutown Transportation, which operates
both regular fixed-route and door-to-door paratransit
service.  In the past, St. Thomas Transit
used mostly second-hand GM New Look, Orion II, and Champion Solo buses along
with a single MCI Classic, but these buses were all determined to be too large
for the city and now the transit service is provided using cutaway buses,
mostly Ford E-450 models, but in 2008 four low-floor IC Corporation LC Series
buses were purchased, similar to those used in other Ontario cities such as
Brockville, Kingston, and Trenton.
